As one of the new generation of Chinese sculpture artists and part of the post-‘80 and ‘only child’ generation, Huang is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of hip-hop, street art and other foreign culture phenomenon in China, which he combines with his fascination with pottery and the material world.
Huang Yulong (黄玉龙) stands as a prominent figure among the new generation of Chinese
sculpture artists, belonging to the post-'80s and 'only child' generation. His artistic vision is profoundly shaped by the convergence of hip-hop, street art, and other foreign cultural influences in China, complemented by a deep fascination with pottery and the material world.
Born in 1983 in Huai'an, Anhui Province, China, Huang's artistic journey led him to acquire a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the esteemed Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangxi Province in 2007. Huang's artistic versatility shines through as he deftly explores various media, skilfully combining traditional ceramic porcelain or bronze with the radiant beauty of crystals. Hip-hop culture serves as a recurring theme in his work, depicted through vibrant portrayals of hoodies and bling. For Huang, hip-hop culture transcends being merely an appropriated foreign phenomenon for young Chinese; rather, it represents a distinct state of being and a way of life.
He perceives hip-hop culture as a profound narrative characterized by energy, power, purity, sexuality, freedom, and courage, while simultaneously acknowledging its urban roots, marked by moments of vulnerability, tears, and struggle.
